Canoe Polo

  • Facebook

What is it?

This discipline requires excellent teamwork and promotes both general canoeing skills and a range of other techniques unique to the sport. Two teams each with five players on the pitch at any one time (and up to three substitutes) compete to score goals in their opponent’s net which is suspended 2 metres above the water. The ball can be thrown by hand, or flicked with the paddle. It is like a combination of kayaking and basketball with a little bit of rugby thrown in! You can see what it’s all about in this video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34GQp7UiY1g

Who can participate?

If you fancy taking your kayaking skills to a higher level with energy and competition, canoe polo is definitely for you. Our teams compete in both regional and national leagues as well as summer tournaments. This discipline might be enjoyed by anyone who plays other team sports or wants to combine technical skills with tactics and teamwork whilst on the water. Canoe Polo combines paddling and ball handling skills with an exciting contact team game, where tactics and positional play are as important as the speed and fitness of the individual paddlers so it can be a sport for all.

What are training sessions like?

Our training sessions aim to involve lots of game time where you can practice and develop your skills and tactical ability in a fun and realistic way. We’ll also do training drills, throwing skills and boat skills on the water as well as the occasional land based tactics session to help with understanding different plays. Sessions are friendly and sociable so come along and meet us!
