Competition in distance canoeing has a long history, with famous national races including the Sella Descent in Spain which was first held in 1929 and the Devizes to Westminster race in England that began in 1948. It was not until the 1960s that international competitions began to develop, and in 1975 the first steps were taken to have canoe marathon recognised by the International Canoe Federation (ICF).
Trentham Canoe Club have a very strong racing section with paddlers involved in Marathon (endurance) and Sprint (short distance) racing disciplines. Race boat sessions are available for all ages and any potential new racers are welcome to join in and give it a try.
With a vast array of racing boats of varying stability, the club can provide all the equipment to get you into racing. We have K1, K2 and K4 as well as a few C1 race boats.
Training sessions are Wednesday and Friday evenings and Sunday mornings (when we’re not attending a race event). Race boats are always available on Monday club nights for anyone wanting to give it a try.
We frequently take part in the North West Marathon racing circuit travelling to many different clubs to take part in race events, both Hasler and 5km races. We also compete at a national level and for several years have taken part in the National Marathon Championships providing a great set of results.
Racing is also available for juniors in the form of the Lightning Under 12 years racing series.
There are also several sprint regattas held across the year at Nottingham. We have a great track record in sprint events and wish to continue this recent form.
