Paddleability
At Trentham Canoe Club we're keen to encourage people of all ages and abilities to take part in paddlesport, and this includes those with learning difficulties and physical disabilities.
We work with several special schools in providing outrigger canoeing sessions to those with a range of learning difficulties and shortly hope to develop a disability outrigger canoe training group run by John Court. Under John's guidance, the Stoke-on-Trent & North Staffs Outrigger Canoe Club, took a team to the Outrigger World Sprints 2006 in New Zealand where they won a gold medal.
A disability outrigger group has re-formed at Trentham and will be training every Tuesday night 6-8pm. For details, contact Dan Hopwood, dan.hopwood@tesco.net
We have links with North Staffordshire Special Olympic Kayaking group, who train on the lake with Jenny Masterman, many of whom have raced for Trentham Canoe Club at the National Sprint regattas. One member, Jade Russ, secured a place on the GB Special Olympics team in 2007, winning two silver medals in Shanghai.
With a new clubhouse being built, our club will be fully wheelchair accessible, further expanding opportunities for disabled paddlers.
