Getting Started
|
So how do I get started in the world of Kayaking and Canoeing?
You can see whether you like canoeing by having up to three taster sessions. These cost £5 for adults, £4 for juniors. After these sessions you will be invited to join Trentham Canoe Club. Click here for full membership details and lake fees.
When can I come kayaking?
Our club night is Monday 6-8pm March to October (British Summer Time). New beginners are welcome to have a go with taster sessions every few weeks - see events calendar for dates.
All club sessions are run by experienced kayak coaches who will teach you from the very beginning. As you progress, you will be able to take both the BCU star awards and the new Paddlepower qualifications, which will test the skills you have learned.
The club provides all safety equipment and boats, just bring a change of clothing and a towel.
Beginners are encouraged to come down to these sessions to begin with to learn the principles of kayaking and canoeing. There are beginners courses available across the year. For full infomation on these please click here.
As you advance there will be options to have a go at other displines of kayaking and canoeing. To see what else we offer, click here.
What should I bring?
To begin with you do not need any specialist clothing, just wear clothes and footwear you don't mind getting wet and dirty. If you have a wetsuit and/or beach shoes - great! If not don't worry about it. Try to avoid heavy cotton clothes - no jeans. Fleeces and football tops are ideal. You need something on your feet, old trainers are fine - no wellies.
You will probably get wet and cold, so bring several layers and remember to bring a complete change of clothes for afterwards. We have changing facilities and showers within the clubhouse.
Where is Trentham Canoe Club?
We are located within the Trentham Estate, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The clubhouse is found at the Monkey Forest entrance of Trentham Gardens. For full directions and maps click here.
